Bill passed away November 14th, 2024. Bill was 96 years old and was very active until just a few months ago. He has been an Optimist Club member for nearly 60 years, most of that with Sutterville Heights Optimist Club. He joined Sacramento Breakfast Optimist Club when he and Pennie moved to Carmichael. He was a past President, Lt. Governor, Governor, and International officer. He will be missed. He set a great example of service to our nation, community and organization. Governor Dee Frewert bestowed a beautiful award on him last Saturday evening which I accepted. Tim Reardon, Marie Calkins, A. J. Dodd, Bill Macriss and I presented it to Bill on Tuesday with his sons present. Bill's daughter had surgery recently and was not able to be there. Services will be shortly after the first of the year. May he Rest in Peace. - Wally Borland
Tough to see Bill decline, this last month especially, but what a great life he lived and what a great life he had in Optimism. No more rides to the barber, the cleaners, the watchman and the hardest no more rides together to our Wednesday meetings.
But Bill is in a better place, where he wanted to be, reunited with Pennie again after so many years!
- Tim Reardon
We are so sorry for the loss of this wonderful man and Optimist! - Lea Colwell Hernandez, JSM
Such a loss of a Great Man. - Gary Palmer
The sadness of the news of his passing has to be seen in the context of he did so much in his life in 90+years and had a great run. And his memory will live on. - Ron Grove
My first Optimists meeting, years ago, I only knew Wally and Gary. I remember Bill's big smile and pointed to the seat next to him saying "Hey! Come sit by me young lady!" A life well lived, and a life of charity even when he didn't have as much to give. He finally gets to reunite with his love. When he told me he was sick months ago, he let me know he was excited to finally see her again. On to the next journey, my friend. . - Cristi Rodda
Bill and his family are in my prayers. I marvel at how sharp and vital he was at his age. He was an optimist to the end and an inspiration to me. It will be hard to see that chair of his empty or with someone else sitting there. He made a difference and will be missed. - Chuck Zanetti

So sad to hear of bill’s passing away. Always sad when a fellow Optimist as well as a veteran passes. May he rest in peace.- Dan Turner
Please know that my thoughts today are with Bill’s family and Optimist members who knew and cared about Bill. - Shannon Ackerman
Condolences to everyone who had the fortune to know him. Bill will surely be missed. I always liked his Winston S. Churchill quote — 'A good speech should be like a woman's skirt; long enough to cover the subject and short enough to create interest.'"
Wally, Tim, Bill, Marie, AJ, -Thank you for showing your love and bringing him our small token celebrating the incredible impact he has had on our lives.- Governor Dee Frewert
Bill's passing is a great loss to our club and the greater Optimist community. But he passed his optimistic spirit on to many of us.
